Low-Dose Atropine for Myopia Control
Low-dose atropine is a very mild medicated eye drop used to help slow down the worsening of nearsightedness (myopia) in children.
Why is it recommended?
If your child’s glasses prescription has increased each year, low-dose atropine can:
- Slow how quickly their nearsightedness worsens
- Reduce the risk of very high prescriptions later in life
- Lower the long-term risk of eye problems linked to high myopia (such as retinal problems)
It does not cure myopia, but it helps control how fast it progresses
How is it used and side effect concerns?
- One drop in each eye at bedtime
- Used daily for several years (often until the mid-teen years)
- Regular follow-up visits are needed to monitor progress
- Safe and well-tolerated: Low-dose atropine is considered safe for children, with minimal side effects.
The goal of low-dose atropine is long-term eye health. Slowing myopia progression now can reduce the risk of serious eye problems in adulthood
